Screw up more!

Talking at the inaugural Campaign for Real Innovation on Tuesday…

As well as learning from some of the leading corporate innovators, and sharing my own experience of product & disruptive innovation there were some great titbits from the audience; here are my quickies:

  1. "Screw up more!" - taking bigger risks, learning and falling faster is critical to staying ahead

  2. Speed is vital; getting over each of the "bins" in innovation and being able to respond to new market / tech / consumer conditions before your competitors. (very important for both brand, own brand and services). Look at process and empowerment of teams to make rapid decisions.

  3. Getting insight is harder in some categories - connecting to consumers at each life stage and across cultural boundaries is important to feed into new innovations.

  4. Bridging the gap between each silo in your organisation through appropriate language and tools helps removes internal barriers to innovation.

  5. Using simple examples of innovation (e.g. Muller Fruit Corner, or Cathedral City Cheddar packaging) really resonates with how to educate stakeholders on innovation; and feels more real than Elon Musk and Apple when developing consumer goods and services.
